About 14 people escaped death on Thursday after
two vehicles collided on the Third Mainland Bridge,
Lagos State.
The two white buses, marked KTU 386 LA and SMK
747 SH, had shattered windscreens as the blood of
some of the injured passengers dotted the road.
However, one of the victims, an elderly woman,
was seen lying unconsciously on the median of the
express where she was laid by sympathisers.
Her forehead was bruised and she was motionless
as a crowd milled around her.
PUNCH Metro learnt that the incident happened
around 2pm when the driver of one of the vehicles
had a burst tyre and in a bid to control the bus,
rammed into the other which was filled with
passengers.
A passenger, who had a cut on his head and was
bleeding from the hand, said, “The driver of the bus
carrying goods suddenly lost control and swerved,
before hitting our vehicle.”
The accident expectedly caused a traffic jam on the
bridge while some officials of the Lagos State
Traffic Management Authority were seen trying to
manage the situation.
A LASTMA official, who pleaded anonymity, said
the victims had been taken to the Lagos Island
General Hospital around 4pm when our
correspondent called for an update.
He said, “We discovered that the bus conveying
goods lost one of its tyres and later rammed into
the other bus.
“There were 14 passengers in the commercial bus
and we had to rush them to the general hospital on
the Island.”
The LASTMA spokesperson, Mrs. Bola Ajao,
promised to call back for more details, but had yet
to do so as of the time of filing the report.
